What is a Bake-Off?
Created by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Paula Vogel, the Bake-Off is a communal writing event in which writers are given a list of “ingredients” to incorporate into a play (for example: a kitchen sink, a front porch, and a withheld secret). The goal is to spark creativity and give writers permission to play. Now in its eleventh year, the Hudson Valley Bake-Off has become a beloved tradition, welcoming first-time writers and seasoned playwrights alike.
In preparation, participants are invited to attend free playwriting workshops led by Christine Scarfuto, Acting Director of the MFA Playwriting Program at Hunter College. All workshop participants may submit short plays for consideration, and between five and seven of these works will be performed by professional actors as part of the 11th Annual Community Bake-Off, hosted live and in person by HVS on November 14 & 15.
