Calvert Vaux, the co-designer of Central Park said, “Nature first, second, and third — architecture after a while.” But architecture wasn’t an afterthought. With his architect partner, Jacob Wrey Mould, Vaux & Mould designed 42 bridges and arches, the charming Belvedere Castle as a “folly,” and the architectural beauty of hand-carved reliefs — the Bethesda Terrace.
