An adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s 1920 play about a fragile Black man named Brutus Jones who becomes the ruler of a West Indian island. This film marked the first time a Black actor (Paul Robeson) received top billing; in 1999, this film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
